Councillors of the Letterkenny Municipal District will this week discuss a proposal to rename An Grianán Theatre plaza in memory of the late Cllr Dessie Larkin.
Cllr Larkin, a former Mayor of Letterkenny, sadly passed away in March 2019.
As the four-year anniversary of Cllr Larkin’s death approaches, Cllr Kevin Bradley has tabled a motion to the Letterkenny MD seeking to rename the public space in front of An Grianán Theatre as a tribute to Cllr Larkin.
Dessie Larkin had a keen passion for arts and culture and was a former director of an Grianán Theatre CLG. He was also a long-serving board member and former Chair of the Earagail Arts Festival, which has held outdoor events in the An Grianán plaza over the years.
During his time as a councillor, Cllr Larkin had campaigned for the plaza to be better used to reach its full potential.
It is hoped that the space will be further developed by summer 2023. Donegal County Council was allocated €137,000 last year to provide outdoor dining infrastructure at Port Road Letterkenny outside An Grianan Theatre, including a platform seating area and a weather-resistant canopy.
Cllr Bradley’s motion will be discussed at the next meeting of the Letterkenny MD on Tuesday afternoon.
