An inspection has been ordered for a bridge that is in a ‘precarious situation’ on the outskirts of Letterkenny town.
The bridge at Carrygawley on the Lismonaghan to Listillion road is in need of immediate remedial work, Cllr Donal Coyle told a Letterkenny-Milford MD meeting this week.
The Cllr’s call comes following a reported crash two weeks ago.
Cllr Coyle said a car hit the pillar of the bridge and luckily managed to steer over a hedge.
“It did a lot of damage to the bridge,” Cllr Coyle said.
He said the bridge is the narrowest part of the route, which sees up to seven schoolbuses passing through daily.
“It’s in a very precarious situation and needs remedial work carried out on it right away,” Cllr Coyle said.
The local authority confirmed on Tuesday that assessments will be made to have a bridge inspection carried out to assess the current condition of the bridge. The information obtained from these inspections will be used to establish the nature of repairs required and the level of funding that is required to carry out these repairs. If necessary, this can then be used when considering for prioritizing of future bridge funding.
