Donegal County Council is seeking funding to make the hard shoulder safer between Conwal Graveyard to Newmills Corn and Flax mill.
Plans are underway to install reflective bollards between the busy R250 road and the hard shoulder that is commonly used by pedestrians and cyclists.
While there is no funding for a footpath, the council is seeking to improve the surface of the hard shoulder as a safety measure. The proposed bollards are intended to separate the traffic from the pathway.
Mayor of Letterkenny-Milford MD, Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly has welcomed the council’s work to improve road safety in this area.
“I’m delighted that an application has been submitted as part of the Community Recognition Fund. I will be keeping a very close eye on the funding application to ensure it is successful,” Cllr Kelly told Donegal Daily.
He added: “This is a facility I have always seen a great need for as did the general public and our engineers
“I travel this road daily, it’s great to see the footfall of walkers, runners and cyclists, but I feel it’s important to have a really good facility in place.
“A lot of local clubs use this route for training and it is often included in marathons and events. It is very important to have a secure path for the events to take place.
“This is an exciting good news story that the public will find the pathway very safe and beneficial once complete, and in turn, I believe and hope this will also create more footfall to the doors of the Newmills Corn and Flax mills. It is a unique and historic building right on our doorstep with huge potential.”
