GAA stars out in force to ‘Play for Joe’

Sports stars will be out in force today to play a fundraising match in aid of renowned GAA coach, Joe McBrearty.

The Killybegs native has developed footballers from every corner of the county and beyond, working with numerous clubs, counties, schools and colleges.

Unfortunately, Joe was recently forced to step away from coaching, and his employment, as he is currently undergoing cancer treatment.

The Killybegs club has decided to run a charity match for their former coach and clubman this Saturday.

‘Play for Joe’ will take place at Eamon Byrne Memorial Park on Saturday, March 25, at 3pm.

Among the lineup confirmed so far includes Michael Murphy as well as fellow 2012 All-Ireland winners Paul Durkan, Eamon and Neil McGee, Mark McHugh and David Walsh.

Joe McBrearty and his son Fiachra.

“We hope everyone in the GAA community can come together and support Joe and his family during this difficult time,” a spokesperson for the Killybegs club said.

“As a show of support for Joe and his family, a fundraising match has been organised. Some familiar faces are dusting off the boots and getting out on the pitch in what is sure to be a fantastic afternoon for an even better cause. Please some along and show your support. Donations will be accepted on the day.”

For further information and updates, go to the Killybegs GAA Facebook page

Last week members of his current club, St Peregrines in West Dublin, organised a ‘static’ cycle, run and row from their clubhouse in Blanchardstown to Joe’s hometown of Killybegs and back (420km).
