Pope Francis has been hospitalised for the treatment of a respiratory infection, the Vatican said on Wednesday.

The 86-year-old pontiff had complained of breathing difficulties in recent days.

The Vatican confirmed that the Pope was not suffering from Covid-19 infection.

Earlier on Wednesday, the held his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square. Following this, he was taken to the hospital to undergo a number of tests and it was recommended that he stay in hospital for appropriate therapy.

“Pope Francis is touched by the many messages received and expresses his gratitude for the closeness and prayer,” a spokesperson added.
