Donegal libraries are proud to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day on Sunday April 2nd.

This day aims to raise awareness and promote understanding of the condition.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects communication, social interaction, and behaviour. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 160 children has autism worldwide.

Donegal libraries understand how important it is to provide resources and support to autistic people, their allies and the wider neurodiversity community.

Libraries here have invested in various services that provide free to all users such as:

  •         A newly installed Sensory Pod in Bundoran Library
  •         Sensory Walls in Buncrana & Twin Towns Library
  •         Tovertafel which are available in Central Library, Gweedore & Buncrana Libraries
  •         See & Learn Kits
  •         Numicon at Home
  •         Touch-Type Read and Spell (TTRS) Literacy & Typing Course
  •         Sensory Toys and Calming Boxes available to use within the library
  •         Sensory Friendly Time at Twin Towns Library that have reduced lighting and noise
  •         Social Stories available to take home and help children understand what to expect when they visit the library.
  •         And they also have many books that deal with the topic of autism & neurodiversity.

“Donegal Libraries are committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our work,” a spokesperson for the Donegal Library Service said.

“We encourage everyone to join us in spreading awareness and help build a more inclusive and understanding world for individuals with autism and their families on this special day and every day.”

Don’t forget, it’s free to join the library and use its resources! Joining is simple, either call into your local library with some ID or join online by going to https://www.donegallibrary.ie/
