Man arrested at Donegal hotel during sister’s wedding

March 31, 2023

A man who resisted arrest after became embroiled in a fight at his sister’s wedding has been told to make a donation to charity.

Michael Craig became abusive to staff at the Silver Tassie Hotel on June 14, 2022.

The 20-year-old, with an address at Ballyarnett Village in Derry, resisted arrest when Gardai attempted to
handcuff him.

Sergeant Jim Collins told Letterkenny District court that there was a ‘struggle’ between Craig and Gardai before he was arrested, handcuffed and taken to Letterkenny Garda Station.

Craig was accompanied to court by his father when his case was heard this week.

Mr Frank Dorrian, solicitor for Craig, said the incident ‘created ripples in the household’.

Mr Dorrian said Craig had ‘significant emotional difficulties’ and had ‘far too much to drink’ on the night.

“He got into an argument with others, the origin of which is unknown and it spilled into the car park,” Mr
Dorrian said.

The court heard that Craig works in an engineering firm and has the prospect of obtaining an
apprenticeship.

Mr Dorrian said his client had not been in trouble before or since the incident.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham said she would strike the matter out if Craig made a €200 contribution to
Donegal Hospice.
