Scoil Mhuire in Creeslough and St. Mary’s Stranorlar were buzzing with activity yesterday as Minister for Education Norma Foley visited for two special events.

In Creeslough, Minister Foley performed the opening of the new school extension.

Principal John O’Doherty and his team arranged a warm welcome for the Minister. Pupils entertained guests with some poetry, music and singing.

“We are thrilled with the lovely addition to our school and our new learning and teaching environment,” a school spokesperson said.

“A huge thank you to everyone who helped with the preparations for today. We had fantastic support and help from so many people. Thank you to everyone who attended our opening and joined with us for the celebration today. It was lovely to be able to share this special day with so many friends and supporters of our school.”

The extension comprises two new state of the art 80 square metre classrooms and a new Special Education Teaching room.

On Friday afternoon, Minister Foley travelled to St. Mary’s Stranorlar for the official opening ceremony of the new school building. Student council members formed a guard of honour for the Minister and the school choir was in fine tune for the ceremony.

Principal Eoghan Roarty, the Board of Management and pupils welcomed the Minister and ended the day with a Flag Ceremony representing 30 different nationalities in the school.

Meanwhile, pupils and staff of Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí in Donegal Town staged a protest at the gates of St. Mary’s highlighting the lack of progress on their own school building.

Northwest Newspix was there to capture the moments:
