The amazing work carried out by the Donegal Railway Heritage Society in bringing home the famous Drumboe steam train is to feature on RTE’s Nationwide programme.

The famous Donegal steam engine ‘Drumboe’ made its way back to Donegal in October 2021.

The last passenger train to leave Donegal town was on 31st December 1959.

Over six decades later, the restored Drumboe engine returned to Donegal this afternoon for an historic homecoming.

Now more than 62 years after it first left, the steam engine sits proudly on a purpose built platform at Donegal Railway Heritage Museum in Donegal town.

The “Drumboe Homecoming Event” will be broadcast by RTE1 on Monday 17th April at 7pm.

An RTE film crew with mobile and drone cameras followed the transportation of the steam engine after being restored at Whitehead, on its journey across several Counties, including stops at Strabane, Biddy O’Barnes and Donegal Town Centre.

This will be half of the program, with the other half focusing on a journey from Belfast to Derry by train, which the museum has assisted with the making of.
