Letterkenny Traffic: Plans shelved for new relief road

Plans for a new relief road in the Windyhall area of Letterkenny have been ‘pulled’.

The revelation was made at yesterday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District. The new road was to start from the Kilmacrennan Road Roundabout, at the Optum entrance (main pic).

Councillor Gerry McMonagle, however, said that the Office of Planning Regulator (OPR) has suggested that plans for the road be withdrawn.

The Sinn Fein representative put forward a motion that, as a matter of urgency, the council request a delegation to the Minister for Transport to seek a Specific Road Funding Grant to upgrade and make the old Windyhall Road safe for all road users.

“This all the more urgent when we read planning reports on the Windyhall road corridor and a recommendation that it be withdrawn,” Cllr McMonagle said.

“This has been pulled out from under us. We need a meeting with the Office of Planning Regulator (OPR) and to seek delegation to the Minister for Transport to upgrade that road. This Needs to be sooner than later.”

Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly said he only found out recently the OPR wanted to pull the relief road ‘completely’.

“We thought this new road was only three years away, now we’re being told it was pulled. This needs to be addressed as soon as possible.”

Member of the Council Executive, Mr Liam Ward, said that a formal request has been submitted to seek a meeting with the OPR.
