A pet dog attacked and killed a sheep while out walking at Magheroarty Beach in West Donegal yesterday.

The incident has been condemned by a local county councillor and led to calls for stronger penalties.

Councillor Michael McClafferty said there are clear signs on Donegal’s beaches that dogs should be kept on leads.

He said “This shouldn’t be happening period. There are ‘no dogs off leads’ signs clearly marked on most if not all our beaches in Donegal.

“Dog owners need to get their heads out of the sand and realise the danger and trauma hurt dogs can do.”

Councillor McCafferty said all visitors are welcome to Donegal with their dogs but that all dogs must be controlled.

He added “I hope the owner of this dog owns up do the right thing and pays the farmer compensation for the loss.

“Let it be a warning to others to stop dogs running out of control and attacking livestock.

“They risk a large fine and also risk their dog being put to sleep.”
