A Mayo man has been sentenced to life in prison for the capital murder of a Garda.
Stephen Silver was today handed a life sentence of a minimum of 40 years no chance of parole.
Silver, 46, of Foxford, Co Mayo, shot Detective Garda Colm Horkan (pictured above) with his own gun as the garda tried to arrest him in Castlerea, County Roscommon in June 2020.
Last month, a unanimous jury found Stephen Silver guilty of murdering a garda in the course of his duty. Silver has a long history of mental illness. However, an expert witness for the prosecution found “no positive evidence” that Silver had suffered a relapse of his mental illness at the time of the shooting.
