Pupils from a Donegal school had a very unique experience when they got the chance to rub shoulders with some of the world’s biggest political names of recent years.
Students from Loreto Milford were invited to Queen’s University in Belfast to showcase their involvement with Politics In Action to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.
The school is partnered with Portadown College in the cross border initiative ‘Poretto for Progression’.
The partnership is funded by International Fund for Ireland and gives the students the unique opportunity to work and learn together through shared engagement, community involvement and residential workshops.
Students Chloe Martin and Tiernan Lynch along with two Portadown students greeted former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and former PM Tony Blair on their arrival and students from both schools had an opportunity to meet and explain the merits of the project to the leaders.
Students also met US Special Envoy Joe Kennedy, Good Friday Agreement signatory & Human Rights Activist Monica McWilliams as well as several leading politicians from across the political spectrum.
A series of panel discussions followed.
The day culminated with Loreto student Jack Mc Bride reading a poem he composed for the occasion reflecting on the legacy of the Good Friday agreement – a fitting end to a memorable day as he picked up a few significant signatures of approval.
