A new recruit to the Killybegs Coast Guard is to star in an upcoming Irish language TV documentary series to be broadcast on RTÉ and BBC tonight.
Ruaidhrí Ó Domhnaill, from Inver, will appear on 999 Faoi Oiliúint, a series that follows the lives of men and women training for a service on the front line.
In episode two, to be broadcast this Monday 24th April at 8.00pm, watch as Ruaidhrí begins his training with the Irish Coast Guard team in Killybegs while Fiona completes her first year with the National Ambulance Service Ireland.
“We as a team in the Killybegs Coast Guard are so proud of one of our new recruits, Ruaidhrí, who during his probation year was recorded throughout the entirety of it,” a spokesperson told Donegal Daily.
A notice from the Irish Coast Guard said they were delighted that the service will be represented in the second episode: “Ruaidhrí Ó Domhnaill from the Killybegs Coast Guard Unit will be followed as he goes through his training to become a volunteer – tune in to RTE 1 on Monday 24 April at 8 p.m. to get an insight into what our brave Coast Guard volunteers have to do to qualify and to see if Ruaidhrí makes the grade!”
The four-part series is produced by Below the Radar and airs on RTÉ One before broadcasting on BBC Two Northern Ireland from 8th May at 10pm.
“Twelve-hour shifts, on-the-spot decision-making, life-and-death scenarios and a diminished social life. Signing up for the emergency services is an all-embracing commitment. It’s a vocation. And it’s not for everyone,” a promo for the series reads.
Whether it’s working as a firefighter, a paramedic, volunteering for mountain rescue or the coast guard, 999 Faoi Oiliúint will follow these new cadets as they undergo intense and gruelling training and find out if they have what it takes to make the grade.
The series features new cadets from Galway Fire Service, Mayo Mountain Rescue, Foyle Search and Rescue, Dublin Fire Service, National Ambulance Service Ireland, Lough Neagh Search and Rescue and the Irish Coast Guard, as they navigate their way through intense training and deal with real-life call outs.
Filmed over the course of a year the new cadets in 999 Faoi Oiliúint display the shared traits of strength, determination, grit and ultimately an unwavering devotion to their work. The peaks and troughs of training will be placed under a microscope, and we see how each trainee emerges from the challenges of being pushed to their limits while moving through the ranks of examinations and training.
