A leading bookmaker is backing Ireland to sizzle this summer.
BoyleSports has trimmed the chances of a new record temperature being clocked in Ireland this year into 7/1 from 16/1.
Optimistic weather watchers have pounced on the latest forecasts from Met Éireann, which have raised the prospect of a sunny bank holiday weekend with the mercury tipped to hit as high as 20°C in the coming days.
Now punters believe Ireland’s all-time record temperature of 33.3°C, recorded in Kilkenny in 1887, could be under threat as Europe braces itself for a heatwave and temperatures soar towards the 40°C mark in Spain.
It’s a 5/4 shot that the highest temperature recorded in Ireland this year falls between 31-32°C, but a growing number believe the history books may need rewritten as the odds on 2023 being the warmest on record have been halved into 5/1 from 10/1.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “The temperatures may be flying up this weekend, but the odds are going in the opposite direction and with punters hot on a new record, we’re sure to be sweating this summer either way.”
