Council tenants can earn up to €14,000 a year tax-free as the government extends the ‘rent a room’ relief scheme.
The plan aims to add the equivalent of 28,000 homes across the country by allowing council tenants to rent out spare rooms in their houses.
The rent-a-room scheme was first introduced in the mid 2000s, but social housing tenants were not permitted to join.
The benefit equates to €269.23 in weekly rent for a room.
The Irish Mirror reports that the rent relief for welfare recipients was initially introduced for two years up to March 2025.
The scheme will not affect a person’s weekly social assistance payments
