Major supermarkets to cut price of bread from today

Three of Ireland’s main supermarkets will cut the price of a loaf of bread from today.

Costs of selected loaves will drop by 10c in Tesco, Aldi and Lidl.

Tesco also reduced its own-brand butter and milk prices in recent weeks.

The moves come after the Retail Forum heard that the annual shopping basket in Ireland this year is going to cost €1,200 more than it did this time last year.

A meeting took place yesterday between the Department of Enterprise and representatives of the retail industry, in which supermarkets were asked to start lowering prices of staples.

Following the meeting Retail Ireland Director Arnold Dillon said:  “Specific pricing decisions are a matter for individual retailers, but intense competition in the sector will ensure that consumers benefit from falling commodity prices. This is happening already and will continue.”
