Frustration over ‘slip’ in public services in Buncrana

Concerns over a decline in cleanliness and maintenance in Buncrana are set to be raised with Donegal County Council next week.

Local Councillor Jack Murray said that residents are “(rightly) frustrated by what they see as a decline in public services” in the town.

While the Tidy Towns volunteers have been praised for their work, Cllr Murray said that services in Buncrana – the main commercial, economic and tourist centre in Inishowen – have slipped backwards.

Basic town services such as street sweeping, the mowing of public green spaces and public garden maintenance have been an area of concern in the town since 2014 when the Buncrana Town Council was abolished.

Almost a decade later, it’s believed that more can be done.

Cllr Murray said he will be raising the matter at the next plenary meeting of Donegal County Council, which takes place on 29th May.

Cllr Murray said: “I have raised this directly with the council executive and the CEO, as have my council colleagues from across the political divide.

“At the next plenary meeting of the council, I will also move a motion demanding the restoration of all services to 2014 levels and will seek support from councillors across the county.

“This is a very exciting time for Buncrana as we progress the application for over €20million of investment in the Shore Front and the new leisure centre (following the incredible success of Swan Park). But we need to maintain the basics. This town can be a contender as the best tourist destination in the country. I think it has more to offer than Killarney or Westport – but only if we have it looking its best at all times.

“Our Tidy Towns volunteers do incredible work but can only do so much. They deserve as much support as we can possibly give.”
