Hand-carved Doochary sign smashed following ‘collision’

A hand-carved stone ‘welcome’ sign on the outskirts of Doochary was smashed into pieces last week.

In a statement on their Facebook page, a spokesperson for the Doochary Development committee appealed for anyone with information to contact Gardaí.

“It would appear that there has been a vehicle collision with the village welcome stone at the top of the corkscrew,” they said.

“This was erected by Manus Elliot’s committee and it is such a shame that whoever has damaged it has not had the courtesy to report the damage.”

The Doochary welcome sign before it was smashed to pieces.

Last month, the group hit out at what they described as ‘repeated attempts’ at destroying their good work. They made the comment after one of their heritage signs was stolen and later found dumped nearby. The theft was the latest in a long list of criminal acts involving works carried out by the voluntary not-for-profit group.

Anyone with information in relation to any of these incidents should contact Milford Garda Station on 074-9153060 or the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111.
