Councillors of the Inishowen Municipal District held a minute’s silence in Carndonagh today to remember 21-year-old Rebecca Browne, who was killed in a collision in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The young hairdresser from Derry was walking back from a night out when she was struck by a garda patrol car at Ludden, close to where she was staying. Investigations are ongoing into the tragic incident.

Buncrana councillor Rena Donaghey issued condolences on behalf of the local community.

“Obviously people are very saddened and in deep shock,” Cllr Donaghey, Leas-Chathaoirleach of Inishowen MD, told this afternoon’s meeting.

“Although Buncrana is no stranger to tragedy, it’s very sad to see a young girl has been killed in our town, with so much to offer and so much to live for from our neighbouring neighbourhood Derry, that we are so closely associated with.”

Cllr Donaghy said that Rebecca was a talented hairdresser, a beautician and also a lovely singer with a bubbly personality.

Cllr Donaghy also issued thanks to the emergency services who worked at the scene of the collision on Sunday.

“We offer our most sincere sympathies to the parents, to the family, to the friends, to the driver of the car, to everyone involved in the tragedy. May God grant everything they need in these dark days ahead.”

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information in relation to the fatal road traffic collision to contact them at Buncrana Garda station on 074 932 0540, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
