Plans to transfer Kilmacrennan parish priest Fr Paddy Dunne to Ballyshannon are to press ahead.
A candlelit vigil attended by more than 300 people was the culmination of a campaign by parishioners to keep the Letterkenny-born priest in Kilmacrennan.
However, it has now been revealed that Fr Dunne has decided to press ahead with the decision of the church.
He informed organisers of the campaign on Saturday night of his decision.
A spokesperson for the committee told Donegal Daily that they are very saddened by the move but respect Fr Dunne’s decision.
“We are very saddened by the news but we have the upmost respect for Fr Paddy and his wishes.
“We would like to thank anybody who supported out campaign in any way and who signed the petition and came along to the vigil.
“We will get on with things now and make plans to welcome the new parish priest into our community,” he said.
