An tSean Bheairic, the renowned cultural centre in Falcarragh, marked their 25th Anniversary on Thursday the 18th of May.

The event, held at the centre, brought together guests, community members, and passionate supporters to commemorate the centre’s big milestone and pay tribute to the individuals who established and sustained it over the years.

Emphasising the enduring impact of An tSean Bheairic, Father O Gallachóir introduced a range of speakers who played pivotal roles in the centre’s inception and its subsequent growth.

Dinny McGinley, Paddy Harte from the International Fund for Ireland, Cathal MacSuibhne, Francie Coyle, Noel Ó Gallachóir, Frank Sweeney of the present committee, and Joe McHugh T.D.  shared their heartfelt recollections and acknowledgements.

Their stories wove a tapestry of dedication, resilience, and community spirit that have defined the legacy of An tSean Bheairic. Each speaker shared poignant memories and expressed appreciation for the dedication and passion of the founding directors.

The directors, Seosamh Ó Dubhchóin, Séamus MacAoidh, Bríd Griffin, John Joe McGee, Aidan McQuaid, were celebrated for their commitment to the centre’s establishment and longevity, while fondly remembering the four directors who have passed away—Paddy Kelly, Carmel Sweeney, Mary McGinley, and Joe “The Rake” Mc Fadden —their lasting contributions and legacies were warmly acknowledged. As a token of gratitude and appreciation, Teresa Doohan, Bríd McGee, and Bríd Ní Ghríofa were presented with bouquets of flowers.

A commemorative book was also launched at the event, which features photographs and interviews with the individuals who were present from the inception of An tSean Bheairic.

Caitríona Kelly, Annette Sweeney, Deliah Doohan, Eva, Conor Ó Gallachóir, Patricia Nic Ruairí, and Eadaíon Ní Bhaoill enthralled everyone with their renditions of sean-nós and contemporary songs. Frank Sweeney and Eileen Sweeney delighted the audience with their sean-nós dancing. Tommy Francis recited a poignant poem he composed specifically for this celebration.

Looking forward, An tSean Bheairic remains committed to its mission of preserving and promoting Irish culture. The founders’ enduring spirit continues to inspire the present committee, as they work tirelessly to ensure the centre’s vibrant future.

The entire event was recorded by William Sayers and Moses Alcorn provided the photographs.
