A teenager who tragically died in a two-vehicle collision in Co Derry at the weekend has been named.
Alex Smallwoods lost his life in the accident involving a Vauxhall Insignia and a Vauxhall Corsa on the Glenshane Road, Dungiven.
The 17-year-old was the driver of one of the cars in the collision on Sunday morning.
He was an adored son of Stewart and Sara, a much loved big brother of Hannah, and the cherished grandson of Elsie, Annie and Billy.
In a Facebook posting, Brigade Cricket Club paid tribute to the teenager.
“Everyone at the club has been left devastated at the news that 17-year-old Alex Smallwoods lost his life in a road traffic collision on Sunday.
“Alex was an extremely popular young player at our club and will be sorely missed by his many friends.
“He had come through all the various youth teams in recent years and had progressed to play in our 2nds and 3rds on a regular basis.
“Always seen with a smile on his face, and with a love and enthusiasm for cricket, Alex was always a pleasure to have in the team.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his mum and dad Sara & Stewart, his sister Hannah and the entire family circle at this very difficult time.”
SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan reacted to the post, said: “Our thoughts and praying are with Alex’s family and young friends at this awful time.
“It’s truly heartbreaking when someone so young, so full of life, is taken so suddenly.
“Cherish every minute you have and share as much love as you can.”
