Gardaí issue Bank Holiday road safety appeal

The June Bank Holiday weekend is here and Gardaí are appealing to everybody to make road safety a top priority when out and about.

Gardaí will have a visible presence on the roads over the weekend, their focus on the prevention of collisions and saving lives.

They are asking all road users to ensure that their car is in a road worthy condition before travelling, to slow down, to wear a seatbelt, not to drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and not to use/hold a mobile phone while driving. Do not continue to drive if you start to feel tired, instead stop off for a coffee, a nap or to stretch your legs and get some fresh air.

“There are many social and sporting events due to take place across Donegal this weekend. Some of these events will attract huge crowds,” a garda spokesperson said.

“Whether you visit a beach, an event or elsewhere this weekend please ensure that you park in a responsible manner and leave extra time for any journeys as the roads are likely to be very busy.”

Illegal parking can hinder access for emergency services and can put lives at risk by forcing wheelchair users and pedestrians with pushchairs out onto the road. Do not park in a disabled bay unless you have a permit which allows you to do so. Please do not block access at piers in case the Coastguard should need to respond to any emergency calls.

Do not leave valuables in your car and ensure that it is locked while unattended.

Gardaí may be contacted 24/7 on the following numbers:

  • Letterkenny 074-9167100
  • Milford 074-9153060
  • Buncrana 074-9320540
  • Ballyshannon 071-9858530

Always call 999 or 112 in the case of an emergency.
