Carndonagh garda station recorded a 35% increase in crimes in the past three years, new figures reveal.

The station was one of the top 10 smaller garda stations to have the largest increase in crime rates since 2019, according to an analysis in today’s Irish Independent.

The north Inishowen area recorded 214 crimes last year, up from 158 in 2019. Among the offences were 57 cases of criminal damage/arson and 47 assaults/threats.

Crimes across all Donegal regions last year ranged from 1,693 in Letterkenny to three in Pettigo.

The Irish Independent analysis of CSO and Garda statistics found that crime levels nationally were up 12% last year. Homicides have risen by 30pc since pre-Covid-19.
