Demanding cyclists to finally get their hard shoulder

Councillor Patrick McGowan has welcomed progress with the planned widening of a dangerous stretch of the N15 Ballybofey to Donegal town road.

Last year, the Finn Wheelers Cycling Club demanded the construction of a hard shoulder on a steep climb known locally as McGroary’s Brae.

Currently, a 750 metre section of the hill does not have a hard shoulder or climbing lane.

However, councillors in the Lifford Stranorlar Municipal District have been informed that Donegal County Council are planning to begin work there later this year.

“The works will provide a consistent road layout, benefiting all road users, in particular, vulnerable road users, in the form of hard shoulders and verges,” a council spokesperson said.

They added that the council is currently progressing ‘utility diversions and associated works’ with the aim of progressing this scheme to construction later this autumn.

Cllr McGowan said this very welcome progress will be a benefit to all road users, especially cyclists and lorries.

“I look forward to this final piece in Barnesmore Gap, into Ballybofey, to be completed,” Cllr McGowan said.
