Most people like to receive gifts on their birthday, but not Ballybofey legend Benny Gordon who celebrates his 98th shortly!

Supporting the club since its foundation, Benny has decided to sponsor Harps home game against Wexford FC at Finn Park on Friday night.

“This is a very special match for one of our most special supporters, as the legend that is Benny Gordon will celebrate his 98th birthday by being our Match Sponsor,” a spokesperson for the club said.

Benny also received a visit from Harps boss, Dave Rogers (main pic), and some of the squad members earlier this week.

A lover of football, Benny has only ever had love for one club, and he is a member of the 500 Club, the Finn Harps fundraiser, in which he has won the top prize of €300 on more than one occasion.

Born in 1925, he started his working career at the Stranorlar Railway Station, but spent most of his life working for the Donegal County Council and the North Western Health Board, now HSE.

Benny’s family have taken after him for their love of the Ballybofey club, as his daughter Margaret Gordon, and grandson Callum are volunteers with the Finnsiders.

After disappointing results home to Kerry and away to Galway, Dave and the lads sent us into the International break in better spirits with a fine victory away to Longford. That was thanks to Ryan Flood’s piledriver, and a goal and assist from Leaving Cert student Sean O’Donnell who also assisted a clever finish for Damien Duffy’s first Harps goal.

Harps have already taken 4 points from Wexford this season, having drawn 0-0 at Finn Park in March before a 1-0 win at Ferrycarraig the following month. Tickets are on sale now for Friday’s clash at https://finnharps.ie/tickets/. Tickets will also be available at the Chestnut Road (Aldi) entrance on the night as usual.

Hopefully it will be an extra special night to remember for Benny!
