Gardaí issue advice after series of burglaries across Donegal

Gardaí say there has been a worrying upsurge in burglaries in Donegal and have urged residents to take extra security precautions.

A number of houses have been broken into in the county over the past week.

Last night, a vulnerable resident disturbed an intruder in Letterkenny while properties in Carndonagh and Killybegs, including a derelict building, were also targeted. Nothing was stolen from any of the properties.

Investigations are also ongoing after a robotic mower was stolen from a garden shed in Raphoe.

Garda Niall Maguire is advising property owners to consider installing security measures. He also reminded members of the public not to keep large amounts of cash at home and to lock garden sheds at all times.

“If you have expensive jewellery then please invest in a safe and ensure that it is well

secured and hidden within your home,” he said.

“Ensure that your doors/windows are closed and locked when your home is unoccupied and remember to set your house alarm.”

Also, always contact Gardaí if you notice any suspicious vehicles/people in your area. Look out for elderly/vulnerable neighbours by alerting Gardaí if you think something is just not right. Take note of the registration number and direction of travel of any suspicious vehicles and jot down a description of any unknown people whom you may feel unsure about.

“It is better to be safe than sorry and we have no problem calling out to check out the area you live in if you have any concerns,” he concluded.
