This three-and-a-half-year part-time course is designed for mature learners and provides a scientific grounding in strength and conditioning application, with a focus on practical application.

Nicola Dunnion, Head of Department of Tourism & Sports outlines “this course is ideal for any individual out there who is working in the sport or fitness sector but may not have the qualifications and education they desire in this area. This course allows people to continue to work in the industry whilst broadening their knowledge and skillset by being exposed to the concepts throughout the programme.”
This programme is ideal for individuals with an interest in the application of strength and conditioning to any level of sport participation, either recreational or elite, and those interested in working in the health, well-being, and fitness sector. Graduates will have excellent career opportunities in various sectors, including strength and conditioning coaching and sports nutrition.
Antoin McFadden, Head of Athletic Performance at Donegal GAA and owner of MFP Strength and Performance, puts a student through his paces.
Keith Higgins, WBL Programme Development Manager for the course also mentioned “The ability to be able to learn while continuing to work provides fantastic benefits for both the student and the employer as they can bring the knowledge they gain for the course back to the workplace and apply it in a practical setting. The course is approximately 75% online, meaning students are required to attend one live online class per week with some modules requiring block delivery on campus. I am happy to answer any questions or queries any potential candidates have and discuss the course in more detail”.
Key areas of study include physiology, resistance training, psychology and nutrition, with a focus on practical application of strength and conditioning. Year three of the programme includes work placement in an industry specific environment and year four includes the Weightlifting Ireland level 1 certification and a research project. All modules have been aligned with the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist ® (CSCS®) accreditation.
Strength and Conditioning opens doors to work in a wide variety of environments, from the grassroots club to the high-performance professional circuit.
The Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree is directed towards people who want to develop their professional career, whether they have experience or none.
Students over the age of 23 may have the opportunity to fast-track their degree journey if they have other formal qualifications in the industry or they have built up experiential learning.
