Disappointment as Iceland’s Letterkenny store closes down

The Letterkenny branch of Iceland has closed down, three weeks after its parent company went into examinership.

The supermarket at the Courtyard Shopping Centre closed its doors over the weekend.

Signs have been placed on the door to inform customers.

Iceland Letterkenny: Monday 10th July

Iceland has been a long-established store in Letterkenny for many years. Following a previous closure, it reopened for business in June 2017, creating 30 jobs.

Job loss fears have surrounded Iceland’s ROI branches since February when the chain was sold to a new company. Last month, Metron Stores Ltd was ordered to withdraw all imported frozen food of animal origin from its shelves following a recall order from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI).

Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry McMonagle said: “It is very disappointing to see Iceland leaving the Courtyard. They were a great outlet for produce and I’m sure that the Courtyard will be working hard to get a replacement tenant.

“It’s sad to see the likes of Iceland, who are a well-known name leaving the town, just shortly after Argos closed in the Retail Park,” he added.

Cllr McMonagle said the closure will come as a blow to workers and their families.

“It’s a big loss for employment in the town, particularly in the time that’s in it, with the cost of living crisis,” he said.

“It is very disappointing for the hard-working staff and hopefully they will find employment soon.”

Donegal Daily has contacted Iceland Foods for comment.
