A unique project celebrating the heritage of Rathmullan undertaken by Rathmullan Tidy Towns has been launched.
‘Look Again! Heritage at the Doorstep’ is a 40-page record on Rathmullan’s built heritage and was launched in Rathmullan SVP Centre on Friday 7th July last.
‘Look Again! Heritage at the Doorstep’ is based on the account of Rathmullan’s built heritage which was recorded in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage in 2010, together with some additional accounts of other buildings of local interest.
Áine Ní Dhuibhne of Rathmullan Tidy Towns said “With the cooperation of the teachers in the two local schools, we asked pupils in the Senior Classes to provide us with their own colourful and creative versions of the photographic images, for a collage for the cover of the booklet.
“We spoke to many of the householders whose houses featured in the 2010 Inventory and recorded their accounts of the history of these and other older local buildings of architectural interest.
“We were delighted by the interest of the children in the photographs of the built heritage which they can see around them and particularly enthused by the creativity and enthusiasm of the children in portraying their own insights in their artwork.
“We will also ensure that all whose houses feature in the booklet will have a copy to promote the conservation of Rathmullan’s built heritage.”
Heritage Keepers is a free programme for schools, youth groups or communities that enables them to explore the built, natural, and cultural heritage of their local place and then plan an action or actions to enhance their place.
In-person, online and blended learning options are available. Last year 20 schools and communities took part in the programme, with most going on to complete a local project or actions. This year, Heritage Keepers had even more participants and there were 35 funded heritage projects.
These funded actions included pond building, local heritage trails, signage for biodiversity, oral history projects and local heritage booklets. Heritage Keepers is run by Burrenbeo Trust and is in partnership with The Heritage Council.
Keep an eye on Heritage Keeper’s social channels for an upcoming call for applications where your school or community group can avail of this opportunity to explore and enhance your local heritage.
