Violence in Letterkenny has to be stopped before someone is seriously injured or killed, Councillor Gerry McMonagle has said during a call to extend the town’s CCTV system.
Daylight assaults in main shopping districts and other violent incidents in public car parks have sparked concern over a lack of surveillance in the town.
Donegal County Council, in conjunction with the Letterkenny Chamber, applied for an extension of the Letterkenny CCTV system last November. The application is awaiting approval from the Garda Commissioner’s office.
Cllr Gerry McMonagle says the application must be pushed on for the benefit of gardaí.
“Gardaí are under extreme pressure regarding resources. We haven’t enough gardaí on the beat and CCTV will be of immense value to gardaí carrying out their duties,” Cllr McMonagle told today’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.
“We’ve all seen the videos of recent violent attacks.
“CCTV would help track down people and help to act as a deterrent to people carrying out violent attacks on our streets and in our shopping centres. It has to be stopped before something is seriously injured or killed.”
The discussion comes after a vicious row resulted in a stabbing incident in Letterkenny Courtyard Shopping Centre on July 1st last.
