A driver has been hospitalised after a stone fell from a trailer he was travelling behind and ploughed through his windscreen.

The terrifying incident happened in the Moville area on Thursday last.

The motorist was travelling on the Carndonagh to Moville road in the Lecamey area between 7.45am and 8.40am.

A large stone then suddenly fell off a trailer the motorist was driving behind and smashed through the driver’s windscreen.

It then struck the driver but thankfully he managed to bring the car under control.

The driver was rushed to hospital where he was treated for his injuries and for shock.

Gardai are now appealing to anybody who was in the area at the time and may have dashcam footage of the incident to contact Buncrana Gardai on 074 9320540.

Garda Sergeant Eunan Walsh said it may well be the case that the driver of the vehicle towing the trailer may not even know about the incident.

However, he stressed the onus is on the driver to ensure that their load is fully secured.

“We would appeal to anybody who may have witnessed this incident or who may have witnessed the trailer before or after this incident to come forward,” he added.
