Donegal County Council has been asked to introduce measures to slow traffic on the Rahan road in Letterkenny.
The measures are being sought for the safety of children living in the locality.
Cllr Gerry McMonagle commented that some cars travel at a “phenomenal speed” coming down the hill and that parents have become very concerned.
The issue has become more pressing during the summer months as children cross the road to play with their friends in neighbouring estates.
“The Rahan road, as we know, is one of the escape routes from the town in the mornings and evenings. It’s become one of the main arteries of the town and there is a lot more traffic than what it was meant for,” Cllr McMonagle told the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District yesterday.
He asked for traffic calming measures or ramps to be considered “before an accident happens, rather than after”.
Cllr Donal Coyle added that there are more young families living in the area due to new housing developments.
“It’s very very dangerous and something that should be dealt with urgently,” Cllr Coyle said.
David McIlwaine, Executive Engineer, said that after an initial examination of the road, the gradient may not be suitable for ramps. He added that the council could look at narrowing the road and providing a traffic island crossing point.
Cllr McMonagle acknowledged that ramps may not be the best solution, adding: “The sooner we get something done the better for all concerned”.
