Still no funding for damaged crash barriers, six years on

Safety fears are mounting over damaged crash barriers on the Milford to Kerrykeel road – six years after it was first highlighted.

Donegal County Council has once again been asked to find funding to repair the barriers located between the road and the water of Mulroy Bay.

Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh said the state of the barrier has gotten more dangerous as the years go by.

“There are parts not fit for purpose at all,” Cllr Kavanagh told this week’s sitting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD.

“It’s on a road that is widely used by visitors to our county and many are not familiar with it, making it all the more dangerous.”

Cllr Kavanagh added that the state of the barrier is holding up plans for a walkway by the Kerrykeel Tidy Towns committee. He said that the proposed walkway would be a great attraction to the local area, but that planning permission was being impacted by the barrier.

Cllr Kavanagh also raised the issue in 2017. In 2020, Cllr Liam Blaney repeated the call for funding.

Now, in 2023, Donegal County Council says there is still no suitable funding pot to source from, as it is a non-national road.

“The design and erection of this Crash Barrier has been included on a priority list that was submitted to Roads Central,” councillors were told.

“We will continue to explore options to source funding for the erection of these crash barriers.”

Cllr Kavanagh asked the council to keep an eye on the issue and to seek funding from a safety or tourism point of view.
