Donegal County Council has been praised for creating a new wheelchair-accessible path connecting Derryveagh Avenue and Gartan Field in Letterkenny.
The path was requested by Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh to enable people in the residential area to access the Gartan field green area.
Cllr Kavanagh explained that there are elderly people and people who are recovering from illness and people with limited mobility living in the area, and that Gartan field is ideal for walking in for those people because it is flat and easy to walk around.
“However accessing the field from the Derryveagh side is difficult because there are several steps to negotiate,” he said.
“The new path now solves that problem and makes the park easily accessible so that people of all abilities can now enjoy a walk in a car free and quiet environment.
“I have also asked the council to provide a railing for additional safety and hopefully this can also be provided.
Cllr Kavanagh has thanked the Letterkenny roads engineer and his team for completing this work so quickly.
“I also welcome the recent funding from Heather Humphrey’s department to Letterkenny CDP via the Community Involvement scheme to improve the green area at Gartan field which will add further improvement to the facility,” he added.
