Singer Sinead O’Connor, one of Ireland’s greatest talents, has died at the age of 56.
The star is best known for her cover of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U.
She was a fearless trailblazer and a feminist who created era-defining music and art.
At the peak of Sinéad O’Connor’s rise to worldwide fame, her iconoclastic actions resulted in her exile from the pop mainstream. In 1992, she shocked the world by ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a performance on Saturday Night Live.
In 2018, she announced that she was converting to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada’ Davitt. She also talked openly about her struggles with mental illness.
Ms O’Connor is survived by her three children.
Last January, her son Shane died by suicide at the age of 17.
