Shock as PP tells mass-goers ‘I am finished in Fanad’

Parishioners in Fanad were left reeling at the weekend when the Parish Priest announced at Sunday Mass that he was quitting.

Popular Fr Pat McGarvey told the congregation before the final blessing: “I am finished in Fanad. I have nothing more left to give, the spark is gone.”

According to today’s Tirconaill Tribune, Fr McGarvey added: “It’s been a tough few years, it’s been a lonesome time. I need a good rest. I’ve discussed it with the Bishop and my own family. Where the future goes, I don’t know.”

Fr McGarvey was the only resident priest in the parish since being appointed PP in 2011.

Bishop Alan McGuckian said that, over the next while, priests from neighbouring parishes will be available to ensure that services are provided.

Meanwhile, Sunday masses have been cancelled in two of the four churches in the parish.
