There was great excitement within the Rosses AC club this week with the news that Eva Logue has been selected for the Ireland team in the under 15 high jump as part of the Irish Development Team.

The team will be travelling to the AAA’s in Birmingham at the end of August.

The selection comes on the back her recent 1.58m jump, which met the selection standard, to secure the U15 girls All Ireland title.

Eva has been with the club since 2016 and her journey has been supported by numerous coaches along the way.

Burtonport 5k

The Burtonport 5k saw a large contingent of Rosses athletes for the popular local 5k race and it was to produce a great battle between three athletes with John Lenehan from Derry Spartan club and Chris Loudon Cambridge Harriers looking to dismantle the winning streak of Declan Ferry.

In the end, Declan was to prove his toughness coming out on top and securing another victory.

Charlie Postie was close behind and ensured fourth place and first over 40. In the ladies section a strong field took to the start line with Teresa Doherty winning in 16:40, Maria Mulligan powered home in 17:20 with local athlete Amy Greene getting up to third in 17:45.

Claire O’Donnell matched husband Charlie with forth place in 19:09 and first over 40. A number of the juniors, Evan Ward, Faela Houston and Aoife McGonigle took on the festival race and came home with prizes and great times.

John Kilmartin 5k

On Friday night last, many Rosses AC members competed in the hugely popular John Kilmartin 5k hosted by Milford AC.

It was a big win for Charlie Postie O Donnell, running strong in 15:58. Second home and getting in good times for the marathon specialist was Shane O Donnell in 16:20 with Patrick Trimble powering around the course in 17:15 to win the M50 section.

Continuing their good form was Paul McKelvey (17:22), Declan Gallagher (18:06), Eoin Boyle (19:02), Keith O’Connell (19:08) and Adrian Bonner (21:22).

In the ladies race, Bernie Boyle was first over 40 and fourth overall in a fantastic time of 19:32 with Cathy Breslin securing second over 50 in 22:00.

Onto Sunday and the Danny McDaid 15km with Shane O Donnell showing his ability for a range of distances finishing second in 51:19. Patrick Trimble was second in the over 50 section in 55:45 with Denis Boner (1:04:53), Noel Boyd (1:20:31) and Keith Boyd (1:27:05). Martina Mulhern was the first Rosses lady back taking second in the over 40 section in 1:05:23 with Evelyn Boyle third over 50 in 1:17:31 and Angela Trimble in 1:35:56.

This is prime racing season with plenty of choice and special call out to the Carrickfinn 5k and 10k on the August Bank Holiday to keep in mind.
