The heartbroken fiancee of tragic Donegal soldier yesterday shared an emotional moment on the day they were due to be married.

Holly McConnellogue and Sean Rooney were due to become husband and wife yesterday.

However, tragedy struck when soldier Sean was shot dead in December last year in a fatal attack on UN peacekeepers in the Lebanon.

Sean spent much of his later life in Newtowncunningham and was buried local following a full military funeral.

Yesterday Holly shared the hope of seeing Sean again one day.

She wrote “08/08/23 We might not be getting married today but we will make up for everything we missed out on when I see you again.”

She also shared a photo of Sean picking his wedding ring in a jewellery shop last year (above).

After his untimely death, Holly spoke about what a wonderful person Sean was and how he showed her the true meaning of love.

At Sean’s funeral at the Church of All Saints in Newtowncunningham last December she told mourners “I am absolutely heartbroken that our life together has been cut short, but I feel extremely lucky to have experienced that person and love.

“Some people don’t ever have an opportunity to love and be loved in the way that Seán and I did.”

Private Seán Rooney, RIP
