McConalogue under pressure as farmer approval ratings slip

Satisfaction ratings for Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue have dropped among farmers, with just one in five believing the minister is doing a good job.

A survey by the Irish Farmers Journal found that 46% of farmers categorised McConalogue’s performance as ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’.

Meanwhile, support for a new farmers’ political party (if one was formed) has risen sharply. Some 72% of farmers said they would vote for a rural party if there were candidates in the next election.

Farmers have been looking towards the Netherlands and the success of the farmer-led BBB party, which won almost 20% of the vote in the provincial elections in March.
