Warning after drones obstruct search for missing person in Sligo

Emergency rescue workers have issued a warning to drone users after a search for a missing person was hindered in Sligo.

Sligo Fire Service and Rescue 118 search and rescue helicopter were called to assist in searching the Garavogue River for a missing person on Saturday evening.

However, two airborne drones were detected in the area, forcing the Rescue 118 helicopter crew to stand down and return to base due to the danger posed by the drones.

The use of drones around airborne aircraft has been a growing concern and this incident highlights the danger.

A spokesperson for the Sligo City Firefighters said: “The dangers of the use of drones around airborne aircraft has been well documented lately so there is no excuse for doing this.

“You are hampering the rescue services in doing their jobs and preventing them from helping someone in need.

“Please keep your drones on the ground when you see or hear an aircraft.”
