A 14-year-old boy had died in Wexford following a tragic accident.

The boy, named locally as Alex Saunders, was found unresponsive in a swimming pool in the back garden of his family home at Cromwellsfort in Wexford town on Thursday afternoon.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics after gardaí and other emergency services and rushed to Wexford General Hospital.

Alex was then transferred to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin but gardaí have now confirmed that he passed away in hospital on Sunday.

Investigations into the death are ongoing and Gardaí say that a file will be prepared for the Wexford coroner in relation to Alex’s death.

Alex was a student at St Peter’s College in Wexford town and is survived by his parents Patience and Paul.
