Well-known Donegal native C.J. McGinley will participate in this year’s Lap the Lough to raise funds for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland.

Letterkenny man Charlie Joe, who works for the ASI as Community Engagement Officer, will cycle 144 km around Lough Neagh – the largest lake in Britain and Ireland – on August 27th.

C.J. has worked for The ASI for over a year, and a large part of his role sees him travelling throughout Ireland and visiting The ASI’s various Day Care Centres and Support Groups.

He has seen first-hand the vital work that the organisation does for people living with dementia and their families in Donegal and nationwide.

C.J said: “I’ve been a keen leisure road cyclist now for over 10-years. I’m doing Lap the Lough because I work with the ASI and see first hand the great work this charitable organisation does every day to help people living with Dementia, their families and Carers”

CJ is ready for the challenge

“Lap the Lough is a 144k (89miles) challenge, so its not for the faint of heart, but training preparation has gone well and I’m hopeful the weather will be good so it will be an enjoyable event. Over 2,000 cyclists take part from all the country and abroad. For me it is a great way to raise awareness about Dementia and the work of the ASI.”

Lap The Lough will take place on August 27th, starting in Moy & Charlemont. To contribute to C.J’s fundraiser, please see https://eventmaster.ie/fundraising/pages/CL72296365.

In addition to his cycle, C.J. is a local champion for The ASI’s Alzheimer’s Memory Walk 2023 in Donegal, on September 24th, C.J. invites local participants to join on a walk of Ards Friary, Creeslough.

C.J. said: “I’m over the moon to be a Memory Walk Champion. I became a champion because I work for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland and want to make a difference for people living with Dementia. I’m walking in memory of friends and family”

To join C.J. on September 24th, please register on memorywalk.ie.

An estimated 2,500 people live with dementia in Donegal. There are 64,000 people living with dementia in Ireland.
