Today’s Inch Mile Swim in Rathmullan has been cancelled due to water quality concerns.
Recent tests by Donegal County Council resulted in a ‘No Swim’ notice being put in place. The tests indicated higher than normal e-coli levels in the water.
However, alternative arrangements have been put in place to hold an informal ‘Crab Crawl’ swim at Portnablagh at 2pm today. You can register via the Gartan Open Swimmers Facebook page.
The Rathmullan swim was organised by Gartan Open Swimmers in partnership with Swim Ireland.
“For health and safety reasons, and for your wellbeing as a swimmer, and in consultation with our organisers and insurers, Swim Ireland, the decision has been taken to cancel the event,” a spokesperson for the organisers said.
“After all the planning, we are very disappointed to have to take this decision, but it was taken with everyone’s best interests in mind. We’re looking at an alternative date and will be in touch in relation to this.”
Registration for the Portnablagh swim begins at 1pm and entry is free for anyone who had registered for the cancelled Rathmullan event.
Donations appreciated from anyone else with all proceeds going to RNLI lifeboats Donegal and Sheephaven Sub Aqua Search and Recovery Unit.
There will be coffee vouchers for the winners sponsored by Revive Dunfanaghy. Any additional kayak support appreciated. Please enter via the comments section on the Gartan Open Swimmers Facebook page to give the organisers an idea on numbers swimming. Hopefully, this will make up in a small way for the unforeseen cancellation of the Inch Mile.”
