Donegal author delves into housing issues in picture book full of hope

Donegal-based author Isla McGuckin is set to launch a brand-new picturebook, April’s Garden, which explores life for children in temporary housing.

The children’s book has been described as a sensitively-told story about families experiencing displacement.

The pages have been beautifully illustrated by Catalina Echeverri.

lsla McGuckin was born and raised in urban Yorkshire, and is now based in rural Donegal. She is a dreamer, a writer and the proud mother of daughters. Endlessly optimistic, Isla believes that words have the power to open hearts, change minds and make the world a better place.

April’s Garden will be Isla’s second book after her first book, Pink Like a Girl, about infertility.

April’s Garden is a story for anyone who, for whatever reason, fears that home is an impossible dream. And April reminds readers that even when things feel impossibly bleak, there’s always something to hold on to. Hope.

In the story, April and her mother have been housed in temporary accommodation. Promised a brighter future by her mother, April finds her life there to be filled with things that are old, broken and impersonal. She longs for her own things and for some beauty in her life but experiences only frustration and disappointment until one day she plants some seeds….

The book is out now and available to purchase from publishers Graffeg, Amazon and Eason’s. A local launch will take place later this month.
