The bathing water quality at Rathmullan beach has returned to ‘excellent’.
An e-coli outbreak was reported in the water last week, forcing the postponement of the Inch Mile Swim event.
The event was rescheduled to September 30th in the interest of public health.
On the 23th August bacteria levels soared to a high reading of 1872. The cause, which is under investigation, is believed to be short-term pollution following heavy rain.
Recent samples by Donegal County Council show very low levels of E. coli at Rathmullan. As of 25th August, levels have returned to a reading of 20.
Excellent bathing water quality was also reported for Carrickfinn, Killahoey & Marble Hill this week.
Lady’s Bay in Buncrana remains under a swim restriction. People are advised against bathing in the water because it was classified as having Poor Bathing Water quality following the 2022 bathing season and so advice against bathing restriction was in place again for the 2023 bathing season. The latest water quality readings from Lady’s Bay, taken on 22nd August, showed “Excellent” quality.
