A captivating play by Buncrana’s Frank McGuinness is embarking on an unforgettable tour across Donegal, Derry, and Belfast.

“Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme” is presented by a dynamic partnership of Amharclann Gweedore and Waterside Theatre, and supported by the IFI.

This gripping production delves into the lives of eight Ulstermen facing turmoil and challenges during a tumultuous period.

“Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme” paints a vivid portrait of these eight compelling characters, delving into their relationships, struggles, and personal journeys. 

Expertly crafted by playwright Frank Mc Guinness, this thought-provoking masterpiece invites you to witness the remarkable journey of these brave men as they navigate the treacherous trenches and face the ultimate test of their courage on the battlefield. Through powerful storytelling and poignant dialogue, Mc Guinness brings to life the harrowing realities of war and explores the profound impact it has on individuals and communities alike.

Venues and Schedule:

  • Amharclann Gweedore – September 21st – Matinee and evening performance.
  • The Lyric Theatre (Main Stage) Belfast – September 22nd & 23rd – Matinee and evening performance on 23rd.
  • An Grianan Theatre Letterkenny – September 24th & 25th – (matinee)
  • The Millennium Forum Derry-Londonderry – September 27th Matinee and evening performance.

The tour will feature three dedicated school performances and an afternoon matinee, making this compelling theatrical experience accessible to a broader audience.

Audiences will have the opportunity to participate in stimulating panel discussions. These discussions will enrich theatre-goers’ understanding of the play’s themes and its resonance with contemporary society.
