There is heartbreak this evening after an 8-year-old girl died after she went missing on a beach
The child went missing from the beach in Cork this afternoon.
The alarm was raised at Fountainstown Beach, near Crosshaven around 4.40pm on Tuesday and a major search by the emergency services was launched.
Gardaí said the body of a girl was recovered from the water at around 7.45pm this evening, and she was pronounced dead.
It is belived the girl was swept out to sea while swimming at the beach.
Gardaí as well as the Coast Guard, RNLI, Fire Services, Customs and Mallow River Rescue were involved in the search effort.
A post-mortem is set to take place, and the coroner has been notified.
