The Stranorlar Parish has been forced to restrict access to the Drumboe Cemetary toilets following a recent bout of anti-social behaviour and vandalism.
The toilet block and store room opposite the cemetery have been damaged in a number of disturbing incidents.
The issues include drinking, littering and vandalism of the store room lock and toilet pipes. The alcove has also been used as a toilet.
A notice to parishioners has called on people to be on alert for suspicious activity.
“As a result of what has happened all gates accessing that side of the road have now been locked and will only be open on the day of a funeral,” said a spokesperson in this week’s newsletter.
“Gardai have been advised, but they also need the assistance of the public visiting the Cemetery to report anything or anyone suspicious to the Gardai, the graveyard committee or the priests, immediately.
“Drumboe Cemetery and the toilets and storeroom have been very well maintained over the years by our caretaker and it is a shame that is being marred and abused by a few people.
“We would hope with the assistance of the public and the co-operation of the Gardai that this issue will be alleviated before other measures have to be put in place.”
